The Bureau for Intellectual Property (BIE), located in Paramaribo, offers local and foreign product developers and trademark owners the opportunity to register their trademarks for their goods in the public trademark registers in Suriname. BIE also assumes responsibility for other associated tasks, such as renewing registrations or making annotations in the public register for recordals. In this context, there is close contact and sound cooperation between our office and BIE, as well as other international trademark representatives, ensuring effective trademark management and protection by us in Suriname.

Pursuant to Article 2 of the Surinamese Trademark Code, the first user of a trademark is deemed to be the rightful owner of that mark. That being said, it is imperative that trademark proprietors register their trademarks at BIE to prove and secure first use.

It is currently not possible to file applications for registrations of service marks in international classes 35-45. It is only possible to apply for registration of marks in goods-classes 1-34. A much-anticipated legislative amendment may soon allow for the registration of service marks as well.

It is currently not possible to apply for other industrial property rights registrations at BIE, such as industrial design or patents.

There are no official fees associated with having our firm act as your representative at BIE for trademark related matters.

Trademark registrations are valid for 10 years from the date of registration in Suriname. In principle, registrations can be renewed every ten years indefinitely.

An original Power of Attorney is required in the name of the applicant, in notarized form or provided with corporate stamp or seal.

The registration date of the mark in Suriname is the same as the filing date of the application for registration.

Due to a serious administrative backlog in processing trademark applications, it can take at least four years from the filing date of the trademark application before the registration certificates are issued by BIE. This also applies to recordals.
